Efficacy and safety of a glutaraldehyde-modified house dust mite extract in allergic rhinitis.

The aim of this study was to evaluate in a multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled double-blind setting the efficacy and safety of immunotherapy with a glutaraldehyde-modified aluminum hydroxide-adsorbed extract of house-dust mites. The findings of this study indicate that allergen injection therapy with modified HDM extract is superior to placebo in allergic rhinitis therapy.

Allergie

Letterlijk betekent allergie 'anders reageren'. Bij een allergie reageert je lichaam op een 'overdreven' manier op in feite onschadelijke stoffen. Voorbeelden zijn allergie voor huisstofmijt, hooikoorts en voedselallergie. Het immuunsysteem ziet bepaalde stoffen als indringers, waartegen het zich moet 'wapenen'. Het gevolg daarvan is een overgevoeligheidsreactie, die zich op verschillende manieren kan uiten.
